Double bit felling axes spread across America in the 1800s, when the logging industry still relied on axes to fell trees. Traditionally, one bit was used for heavy duty work that could dull the blade, while the other side, had a finely honed edge and was kept in reserve for fine cutting. The great thing about double bit shafts is that the user has the option to profile each blade differently.
